A week of firsts….
Today I helped sell 20kg of sausages. Australians aren’t hot-dog fanciers, but we love a sausage sizzle. Our women’s group, the Berwick Evening VIEW Club, had a stand outside a homewares and haberdashery store called Spotlight, and manage to snag the husbands/partners as well as the women and their kids. I don’t care if I see another sausage for a month! But it was fun and I feel like I’ve experienced another Australian tradition.
Finished up a website for a friend. It’s now ‘live’ to the world.
Prepared a flyer for the next VIEW Club trivia night. This is another fun activity. Not exactly Australian only, but quite common here for fun and to raise money for worthy causes. Last year we raised nearly $1300 for The Smith Family toy drive and Learning For Life students. This year the theme is Australiana, and hopefully we’ll have a best dressed Aussie costume award as well as the quiz winning table. Oh, a ‘table’ means a group of usually 8 or 10 people who sit together. The table doesn’t answer questions. That would be silly.
Also presented a session to the Casey Computer Club on using a graphics program called Irfanview. I think the group of 30 or so were surprised at how many interesting things they could do with a ‘freebie’ program. I used to do presentations and demonstrations for this group a few years ago, but had stopped for some personal reasons. It was good to be back and teaching again.
Speaking of teaching, a real first for me that commences this weekend is an online course I’ve been invited to tutor for the Australian Computer Society. Although I spent many years managing online education programs when I worked in Maricopa, it’s been a while since I’ve taught using a computer-based learning platform. This one is called a Moodle. Students receive the readings and post their assignments through the computer, plus participate in online discussions each week. I’m looking forward to this. Students are from all across Australia, plus two from overseas. Should be quite interesting and challenging.
All in all, an extremely varied and busy week. Now what was that book I was supposed to be writing? ::sigh:: On hold again.
