Next Hairbrained Idea - NaNoWriMo

OK, what is NaNoWriMo you ask? It stand for:

NAtional
NOvel
WRIting
MOnth

The concept is to write a 50,000 word (about 200 pages) novel starting on November 1 and ending by 30 November. That is 50 pages a week! Lots of people, I mean 10s of thousands lots, start the project and don’t make the total. I’m going to have a go. There are at last count 269 people who say they are from Melbourne participating. Plans are in the works for a gathering at a BBQ park in the city to kick it all off so I’ll go along to that and see how varied the group is.

I charted out the bare bones (really bare!) of six possible stories. Well, four, and then I shuffled the components to see if I could come up with something more interesting. I was fascinated to see that ALL of them fall in the ‘chick lit’ genre. I’ve never considered writing a chick lit book, but there you go. If it happens, it happens. If not, well, so what? The point of the project is to free up and stop self-censoring for that month - just write! If you polish or question, you can’t manage to get it finished in the time available. No prizes, just a sense of accomplishment and recognition of doing something not many people manage to finish.

It’s a fascinating concept and it’s not too late to sign up. For more information: http://www.nanowrimo.org/

Wish me luck! It is going to be a long hot spring…..(nearly 100 degrees here yesterday — wayyyy too early, and makes me wonder what hell summer is going to me…)
